An old tradition... brought back from the grave by Kerry Skadl... after the meeting this Wednesday (4/15/98). So bring your chocolate bunnies if you have any left over from Easter... or stop at the store and buy the marked down items... and bring them to this weeks meeting. ***Question From the Great Void*** What story does this plot belong to? "The story is set (my professor thinks) in Australia, where a species of Ape is discovered which can be taught to speak English. Some humans teach them to speak and then enslave them and force them to work in a mine. In the course of events, a human kills an ape in a work-related dispute. The human is brought to trial and the substance of the book is the debate about the killing. Is it a crime such as murder or is it just the careless killing of an animal? Does the fact that these apes have language give them some added stature in our social scheme such that their civil rights are greater than an animal that does not speak? Any suggestions or leads you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again./ Vivian" *** Roth Pond Regatta Cardboard Boat Race *** is this Friday. We may begin building the boat after the bunny beheading tomorrow night - but at the very least we will definitely be working on it Thursday night. If you have duct tape PLEASE BRING IT. The Forum has $0 left in our account. We would like the boat to resemble the Defiant... if you want to help build or paint, come by. The race starts 3:00 Friday... so come down to the pond and cheer us poor schmucks on! *** Party at Joe Lauher's *** also this Friday. Focus of the party was abusing Skip if I remember correctly. Directions are in Log... look back a bit, he wrote them a few weeks ago. These parties have a reputation - could be interesting. *** Comic Sale and Publicity Stunt *** Late April (pending final date). We will be selling comics (money goes towards helping students afford Worldcon in August), and giving away merchandise that the Electronic Boutique will be providing. If you have comics you would like to donate to the Forum to sell, bring them down. Also ask comic stores if they would like to donate a box or two for the fund raiser. *** Worldcon Money Collection *** If you plan on taking advantage of The Science Fiction Forum's group rate to ICON, (this is $100), please give me or another officer a check made out to Bucconeer before June. All current students in the Science Fiction Forum will split the money we have fund raised to help reimburse them. There is no guarantee has to how much money this will add up to per person... and you will not receive the money until after the convention has taken place. Depending on how many students go you could receive all of the $100 back or as little as $5. *** 30th Anniversary *** Is still November 13th. Attention has been drawn to the fact that Philcon happens that weekend, but at this time, since we can't now change the date, we suggest that people who want to attend Philcon - come to the 30th Anniversary celebration on Friday evening, then attend the convention for the rest of the weekend. "Destinies" on WUSB has offered to do a live show the night of the 13th for the Anniversary. Does anybody know how to get in touch with the founder of the Forum, Jim Frenkel? Please send e-mail/snail mail addresses of people you think would want to know about the event -- we are trying to be as thorough as possible with our invitations. *** Party at The Jim's *** on the 24th. See Log for directions. *************************************************************************** Name: Jennifer Adams Alias: "Beatnik" Title: Presarian (President and Head Librarian) Organization: Science Fiction Forum, a.k.a. There was a long (and boring) discussion on rec.arts.sf.fandom about "Kosher animals" which dealt with the very question of whether chocolate Easter bunnies were Kosher, and, if so, why.
