The Top 10 Reasons the Forum is better then any Fraternity or Sorority:
10) We're Older then any other Student Org. (est. 1968)
9) We have more Traditions (mostly harmless) but aren't bound by them.
8) We have greater Alumni involvment (I-con is bigger that Homecoming).
7) All activities are completely voluntary (peer pressure notwithstanding).
6) All financial involvment completely voluntary (^see note above^)
5) No national HQ to answer to (we'd ignore them anyway).
4) Membership open to anybody (it's helpfull to appear Human).
3) No Academic Specialization necessary (it's a social org.).
2) No Academic Standards ("Highest IQ, Lowest GPA").
And the Number One Reason...
1) We've never been on 'Double Secret Probation' (we think!)

Maybe it's the Organizing Geek in me but I think it'd be cool if there was a better national contact between all the sci fi organizations around the country. Not necessary an HQ but a good network. *shrugs* _________________ Come to the Dark Side.

There has been a few attempts to create 'satillitte' 4ms in other colleges, twice I think. I also think there is a sci-fi club in some upstate college started by someone the 4m knows but they had no interest in being in contact. _________________ -(the) Jim |

It's certainly been tried - going all the way back to the 1930s when Hugo Gernsback himself started the Science Fiction League. It petered out after Gernsback's publishing company went bankrupt. _________________ --Doc |

I tried to get into ZBT. Never had a chance. Wishful thinking, but I saw the writing on the wall the third day and left.
I definitely would have gotten in AEPi. I knew one or two members through Hillel and Chabad. They were already treating me like one of their own. Problem was they were disorganized, and the chapter folded a month later. No affiliation came back. Their rock was painted over a year later. I think I saw a new rock a couple of years ago indicating they came back to Stony Brook.
I'm a bit sorry I never tried TKE. There were a couple of instances of me interacting with members. They were very nice to me.
In the long run I don't regret nor am I upset I didn't join a fraternity. I already had other interests in college, including the Forum, for which I'm sure there would have been additional scheduling conflicts to all I was having. If I didn't give the fraternity high priority they would not be so understanding. Gaming every Saturday and sometimes Sunday was the best. Even when I was more "orthodox" than I ever was before, since, or now, there was always gaming. Still is. _________________ Cosmic Encounter is the best game ever! |

The first official satellite was at SUNY Oneonta from 1982 to 1985 or so when they launched me in that direction with a few cartons of duplicate paperbacks, a first Log with words of wisdom from the SB crew, and a box of animal crackers. Having been associated with the Forum since Junior High School through the Waterloo crowd, it only seemed natural. Regrettably, the club did not survive long after my stay there as it never really got the recognition or funding it needed. The books may still be in the basement of Fine Arts where we met, but I did have my sister retrieve the log book when she attended there, and I returned it to the Forum in the late 80s.
Nothing like someone replying to a two year old thread...

Hey love to any thread is still love.
Also, more satalite 4Ms started to appear within the past 2 years, as many 4mites had to switch colleges. The SUNY Oneonta was re-found. I don't know if it took off again. A Farmingdale one was also attempted. Little by little we try to spread. The problem is, only at Stony Brook, can you seem to find the people that are...well...us most of the time. |

well, #4 is no longer true. the 4m was forced by the current incarnation of the student government to more narrowly define membership. _________________ -(the) Jim |

I would argue that membership is indeed open to anybody, but Voting Privileges involving spending money are limited to Undergraduate Students of SUNY Stony Brook. Indeed, we have many virtual members both here and in the Yahoo Group who have never set foot on Campus (or even on this continent.)
Secondly, regarding the "current incarnation of the student government", in the intervening years since that was written Forumites killed off the previous incarnation, Polity. So in some sense their retaliation limiting membership could be considered Karmic Retribution. (on the other hand: watch yer ass SGA. you've been replaced once already...)
Finally and more importantly, despite the fact that i'm no longer a Voting member, I will ALWAYS be a Forumite. |
